About the speaker

Professor Emeritus Nazar Amso MB ChB (Baghdad), FRCOG (London), PhD (London University), and
Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK)

Professor Emeritus in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Head of the Academic Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, School of Medicine, Cardiff University (2001-2002 and 2010-2013) and Senior Consultant in Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine since April 1998. He qualified from the College of Medicine, University of Baghdad, Iraq in 1974, obtained his MRCOG (London) in 1985, PhD in reproductive medicine from London University in 1996 and FRCOG (London) in 1999. Nazar is an Honorary Consultant at the University Hospital of Wales and his clinical interests include gynaecological ultrasound, reproductive surgery and minimally invasive techniques. He regularly supervised undergraduate and postgraduate (MD/PhD) students and was the Director of Cardiff University Ultrasound Masters programme for obstetric, gynaecological and medical ultrasound (2004-2016). His research projects over the past three decades included reproductive medicine, minimally invasive treatments, gynaecological ultrasound and more recently the role of simulation in ultrasound education. Nazar was the local principal investigator of the United Kingdom Collaborative Trial for Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS) and was a member of its ultrasound subcommittee. He is a Non-Executive Director of MedaPhor PLC, which has received university and national innovation awards for its virtual reality ultrasound simulation and more recently, artificial intelligence products. He was the founding President of the British Society for Gynaecological Imaging (2007-2016). Currently, Nazar is pioneering a novel concept to bridge the gap between tertiary or university hospitals and peripheral units by integrating simulation-based distance learning with health service improvement technology.
